It seems as if baring my soul to you guys comes naturally these days.
Some time ago, I told you about our work in Honduras.
I shared with you about the people, their poverty, and yet, their filled hearts.
Matt has been to Honduras 12 times in his life and we now lead groups whenever we can to build houses there. (check out video below)
It now feels more important than ever to me to provide not only a house, but a home. I'm trying to think of ways to do that this year...maybe painting art work on simple paper, painting a wall, etc.??
My passion for the people there was instantaneous, and I am delighted to know that one day you'll read about our adoption journey there.
I wanted to talk about another journey today, though.
I met Amber Foster a few years ago on my second trip to Honduras. She moved there and has been working and loving the people there for years.
This is her family now, Darwin and little Rosie. I honestly sometimes don't think the world is able comprehend someone like Amber. She lives not for herself, and is continually pouring out for others.
Her work in Tegucigalpa, Honduras involves much labor, and she is beautifully invested in serving the community there.
So much so that she began Breaking Chains Ministry, a ministry to feed and encourage the homeless of the capital city.
We'll get to see Amber again this year when we take a group of 25 college students over in May. And we'll get to help with Breaking Chains.
Here's where I need your help. Amber asked me to come up with a craft for the homeless men, women, and children to participate in. She has no idea how special that is to me...before we talked she had no idea that I was passionate about creating.
But if there's one thing I'm more passionate about, it's people. And being able to give to them in that way....I can't really even describe the excitement I feel.
Praying it will be as much a blessing to them as I'm sure it will be to me.
So, I guess I'm asking for help. You guys are who I create with. If I can't ask your advice, whose can I ask?
What would you do?? She says they'll love painting canvas boards...but I also want to think on it a bit. To make sure I'm extending them joy.
So, it just got me thinking.
What if all of our crafty community got involved in this? In something bigger than ourselves. And blessed others with our gifts.
What if we all sent supplies or you helped me with ideas? Or we sent simple paper paintings for them.
Sent them a physical proof that someone loves them. Someone is reaching out.
If we all sent one thing, we could probably fill a whole shipping container.
You game?
It will be amazing to see so many from all over come together for one purpose.
Creating on a mission.
Creating to Bless.
There are so many ways you can get involved with the work at Breaking Chains and in Honduras. Please leave me a comment with your ideas, or if you'd like to get involved in any way. Please pass this along to your blogs if you think this could be as big as I do.
I'd love to spread a whole bunch of the joy you all give me to another piece of the world.
Thanks for listening,
:-)
P.S. If you want to find out more about Amber's journey in Honduras, you can follow her blog here and find her on Facebook here.
****NOTE: the crafts will be for the homeless we'll get to feed at Breaking Chains, so send me any ideas that would be appropriate for them. :)
Oh, I like the way you think/love.
ReplyDeleteWonderful idea! Though I don't have a blog, I would love to help out with a craft or supplies, just let us know how/when! :)
ReplyDeletei would love to help out, but my idea for a craft doesn't involve too much i can send besides paper and ink. i think that there is so much beauty and inspiration in the world around us and in the land, and nature. what if you had each person find one thing outside that inspires them or moves them or just makes them smile, and then stamp it on a piece of paper?
ReplyDeleteI would love to help out! I think about the crafts I have done and the ones that bring me the most joy are the ones that are useful. Maybe there is a way you can decorate something they could use everyday, like a dishtowel or a tablecloth. I am sure you could find some plant infused dyes for them to create some beautiful linens, blankets, towels? Just one thought.
ReplyDeleteWhat a blessing you are to the people of Honduras and to us! This is the first time I have visited your blog, but already love you to pieces!! I will definitely be back to see how I can help...even then I am not personally creative, I am a GREAT "see it and run with it" kind of girl.
ReplyDeleteI wonder about something like simple jewelry that they could have on their person and make special to them. I've done wire sculpting before, and it's something that would be somewhat easy with very little cost. Copper wire is pretty inexpensive and you could do cuff bracelets, rings, pendants, etc. They would just need to have some examples to give them ideas and get them started. I love your big heart my friend!
ReplyDeleteThat is a wonderful mission you are on, Shaunna. I love your ideas for and will have to think about this one. What about painting inexpensive dropcloths into rugs for their homes? Fun, easy, and something they can use. I'll put my thinking cap on.
ReplyDeleteWhat a blessing you are, Shaunna! Such a wonderful idea! Let me know how I can help!! Meanwhile, I'll be thinking..... :)

How about blank notebooks for ART JOURNALING! Composition books are cool and you can get them cheap along with white glue/glue sticks, pencils and markers when school supplies go on sale here Stateside. There are lots of us who have old scrapbooking papers that we could donate ;) You could also use old magazines for them to tear images from and perhaps you could get some old ones from Honduras donated to save on shipping costs and the language and picturs would be more appropriate. Art journaling is a great way of expressing yourself and this might be good for the homeless...it might give them a sense of hope and an emotional freedom. Here is a great link to Teesha Moore's art journals...she rocks ;) Hope this helps and I'll be following along to see what you need for donations.

What a blessing Shaunna. Amazing that being creative and having a voice by blogging can create opportunities for making a difference. Since it's for homeless people what about those fleece blankets that are just made by cutting into the felt and then tying the edges. KWIM? I like Lisa's comment about using dropclothes...perhaps as some sort of carrying bag for their things? Let me know how I can help.

What a great idea. I love the idea of jewelry or some type of "luxe" item... to show them that there is no rich and poor in the Lord and that all those who are His children are royalty.
ReplyDeleteMaybe like a little box they could decorate and then they could write out things they've prayed for and see how God's answered them?
Thanks for another inspiring post. I like any crafts involving chalkboard paint. Its something that can be used over and over to doodle or communicate as a post board.
ReplyDeleteMy recent post is about my 18 yr old nephew who left for Haiti for 6 wks. He is with Mission of Hope Ministries. Stop by sometime :)

Awesome! I'm somewhat new to your blog and I just love it!! My husband has been on a missions trip to Tegucigalpa (sp?) by himself and we've both been together to Mexico, and then I've been to Africa by myself (before I met him). We have a heart for Missions as well! I'll have to think more on the craft ideas but just wanted to say "hi" and thank you for your heart! =)
ReplyDeleteYou are inspiring! What about tissue paper crafts - the colors are endless and if you made flowers they would have something bright to look at all the time. More than happy to help, let us know what you need when you decide.
ReplyDeleteI would truly love to help out in some way. Please keep us posted about what we can do, or even contact me personally if there is something specific I can do. Thanks for providing this opportunity!
ReplyDeleteI remember once when I was on a mission trip to Mexico that the ladies in the church we were working with made little flower pots for us with flowers that were dried beans glued onto a half-sphere of foam on a stick (stem). Sounds a bit strange, but it was cute and had an appropriate verse on the pot. - Mandy
Shauna, I've done this project with non crafters and they loved it. Take two envelopes and tuck the flaps into each other. Fold cardstock in half and place inside the envelopes. Punch a hole at each end of the envelope/folds and thread seam binding or a thin ribbon to secure the journal. Then you can decorate, color, paint, add pictures to your hearts desire. I use about 4-5 pieces of cardstock and a #9 envelope is perfect size. Hope that makes sense. I love making them as gifts.
ReplyDeleteHi. I'm a teacher and was just watching a video on youtube today that shows a great demonstration of weaving using drinking straws. I'm not sure if this would be appealing to you or not...Just wanted to share: Copy and paste the link below.

I love Roberta's idea of making /decorating journals with art, doodling, collages from magazine pictures, etc. This would be a multi level way for self expression, whether with words or pictures and can be ongoing in their lives. Michael's sells sturdy ones with wire binding, and I'll bet you could get them to donate some to the cause! I love your passion and even though I've just met you through MMS, I already love you!
ReplyDeleteIt's not so easy for me to come up with a good craft for these homeless people. I'd want to make sure that it was useful. Something that they could use with or without a home. Paintings & jewely are lovely, but where would they hang a painting if they have no home and would someone steal the pretty trinkets to sell for money? Not trying to sound negative in any way, just trying to figure out what would be best & most useful to those specific people. Maybe I'm over thinking it all. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteShaunna - Would you share about this with my Circle at our church? I will call you. I am so interested in this. Love you.
