Guest Bedroom Reveal

You open your hotel room door.

You somehow find the light switch that is mysteriously hidden in the darkness of your awaiting home.

Well, home for the next few days.

And you see it.

The fluffy, squishy, down-filled (or maybe synthetic down-filled, but who's counting) bed.

Is there anything better than not having to clean the room, worry about the perfection of it?

To feel free enough to really enjoy it....to live in it.

I want nothing more than these same feelings to come over my guests when they enter the space they'll use while staying in our home.

Way back in August, I did this room while Matt was in China for 3 weeks.  I told you about my newfound fear of stepping on the top rung of the ladder, and how much of a pain it was to paint the 10 foot walls...yikes.

It's finally time for you guys to see it.  I still have a few things I'd like to add, but for now, it is finally on its way to becoming a real guest suite.

Before:

(p.s. this is sort of an unfair shot since this was immediately after we laid the flooring a few years ago and painted it...the red just never suited it for me.  there was actual bedding, etc., but this was the bones of it)

After:

I really, really love it, and I hope my guests do, too.

The elements I wanted to incorporate:
white bedding
interesting headboard
a chest, trunk, and side table
the drapes were staying!
color palette of white, aqua, silver, and natural textures

The first thing I envisioned was a soft, soothing blue-green on the walls.  I had done much research on the subject as it's my new fav color and I had considered it for the writing room bath.

We chose Valspar's Misty Surf and added two pumps of white to lighten the intensity a bit.  It really is the exact shade of a mermaid's tail.

I've seen one, you know.

:-)

We also incorporated some darker metals, like the oil-rubbed bronze chandelier from CSN and the oversized wrought iron sconce.

Along with the ORB, the natural textures like the twig wreath, seagrass baskets, the burlap-style bedskirt (already owned), and the natural linen keep the space from feeling too sweet.

The bedding (minus the sheets found at Walmart) was all from Pottery Barn, but I saved big bucks by buying it on Ebay.  The two shams were $9.99 and I cannot remember the collection name, but it is discontinued now.  The "Candlewick" duvet cover was $24.00!!  I believe the sheet set was $11.95.  All the bedding: $45.94.

(lumbar grain sack pillow-Ticking and Toile...love!)

You saw the side table makeover earlier in the year....this really was the perfect find for this spot.  The bottom shelf is perfect for holding a basket of guest's goodies...magazines, coasters, and a couple of books.

You know me and books.

;-)

The Wisteria-inspired chest is without a doubt my favorite piece of furniture in our home.

I like this cutie, too.

The antique pressed-back chair that I intended to sell really has found its home in here.

I found some salvaged trellis pieces and made them into a headboard.  I also love the antique trunk I painted to give us some serious blanket storage.  And I may have flipped the top of the bedspread down to the foot to get that lovely puddling on the floor.

Interesting headboard....check.
Soothing sand and sea inspired palette....check.
Beautiful and functional furniture....check.
White, fluffy bedding....check.

Dreamy escape for my friends and family....check.

Well, at least I hope so.

:-)

What do you think?

You wanna come hang out in our guest room?

You can Netflix a movie with me, too.

:-)

  13. Great Job Shaunna! It is beautiful, relaxing, not to feminine, and cozy. Way to go on getting a guest room completed. That has always been the neglected room in my house. You inspire me to try to make-over mine so that I will stop throwing things on the bed. (:
